UI Health Honors Jewish American Heritage Month

Beyond Awareness- Jewish Women, Cultural Identity, and Care in Healthcare

This May, UI Health recognizes Jewish American Heritage Month through a learning and reflection experience that connects cultural understanding, patient care, and the meaningful contributions of Jewish professionals in healthcare—with a dedicated focus on the leadership and impact of Jewish women.

Healthcare is shaped not only by clinical expertise, but by identity, history, and lived experience. Jewish patients and professionals navigate healthcare systems within a broader social context that can influence trust, safety, and engagement. At the same time, Jewish women have played a critical role in advancing medicine, research, public health, and healthcare leadership—often at the intersection of gender and cultural identity.

This event brings these dimensions together—increasing awareness of antisemitism in healthcare while also recognizing the contributions and influence of Jewish women—to support more informed, respectful, and inclusive care practices.

From Awareness to Representation

Understanding bias in healthcare is essential—but incomplete without recognizing the individuals and communities who have shaped the field.

This session will begin with a discussion exploring how antisemitism can impact healthcare experiences, workplace culture, and patient-provider relationships. The conversation will then shift to highlight Jewish women’s achievements and leadership across healthcare, creating space to reflect on representation, visibility, and the pathways that shape professional and patient experiences.

Together, these perspectives aim to strengthen cultural humility while reinforcing the importance of recognition and representation in building equitable healthcare environments.

Attendees Will:

  • Develop a clearer understanding of how antisemitism may appear in healthcare settings and its impact on patient trust and workplace experience
  • Learn practical strategies to respond to bias and support inclusive, respectful care environments
  • Gain insight into the contributions and leadership of Jewish women across medicine, research, and healthcare systems
  • Explore how identity—including religion and gender—can shape both patient and professional experiences
  • Strengthen culturally responsive communication and care practices that improve outcomes and workplace culture
