UI Health Honors Disability Employment Awareness Month: Neurodiversity at Work
This October, UI Health recognizes National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) through Access in Action, an interactive learning and engagement experience focused on disability inclusion, accessibility, accommodations, and inclusive practices across our workplace and healthcare environment.
Accessibility shapes how employees work, how patients experience care, and how individuals participate fully within our organization. Access in Action brings together practical resources, interactive learning, and partners from across UI Health and UIC to help employees better understand disability inclusion and identify ways we can reduce barriers for colleagues, patients, and visitors.
Participants will be able to explore interactive learning stations, connect with accessibility and accommodation resources, learn about disability-inclusive healthcare practices, and participate in a virtual learning experience.
The event will also honor the legacy of former ADA Coordinator Peter Berg, whose advocacy and lived experience contributed significantly to accessibility and disability inclusion efforts across UI Health and UIC.
Special guest Pawficer Ham, a therapy dog with UIC’s Campus PAWS Program, will also join us as we explore the important differences between therapy animals and service animals.

- Disability-Inclusive Healthcare: Explore approaches that strengthen access, communication, dignity, and patient-centered care.
- Therapy Animals and Service Animals: Learn about their different roles, access rights, responsibilities, and appropriate etiquette.
- Accessibility Tools and Resources: Explore practical tools, supports, and strategies that help remove barriers.
- Community and Campus Partnerships: Meet partners advancing disability inclusion and accessibility throughout UI Health and UIC.
At UI Health, advancing accessibility and disability inclusion is part of creating an environment where employees, patients, learners, and visitors can participate fully and equitably.
We invite staff, faculty, clinicians, learners, and students to join us during National Disability Employment Awareness Month to learn, engage, and put access into action.
